no, seriously, in stephen king's book on writing, he says that he is long winded and if he were a better writer he'd be able to write what he wants without having to put so many words into it.

this post, it would seem, is actually not sarcastic. i think i need to go shoot myself now for my insolence.

We should just get a librarian, and re-open the WEBPAGE we had for character sheets.

Character sheets will one day be hosted on our website.

Just... differently than they have been.

And one ring to rule them all!

Now on a serious note, Joe is right. While some writers do need detail in epic amounts, good writing is a balance of knowing what words to use, and how to get your images and ideas accross in a precise and decisive manner.

As a general rule of thumb, it would be a bit obtuse to say that longer is better. Unless you're a woman.

Bah. Just...bah.

I don't mean pulling off a John or a Tarren and writing a novel per post, but something along the lines of at least two paragraphs with no less than 3 sentences each.

Thats my rule of thumb.

But yeah, if you can say the same thing in 2 sentences instead of a paragraph, then I say do that. Otherwise, detail = good.

well, as a somewhat experienced writer and rper, I dissagree, sort of. What I said before, about being concise, that's important with details too. A friend of mine just got finished writing a book, and I helped to edit it to the stage it's at right now. She's had several people read it and all coment the same thing, they love her description and details. she is always shocked by this because she writes only the bare bones of the story. but in writing only the bare bones, she writes something else, the marrow. underlying all of her words are the intent of those words. a character's actions and words for her, always convey exactly what is going on, exactly what is needed for that scene. she lets her characters create the scene, and doesn't force it with details of her own that muck up he story. it's an important lesson she learned to do while she was writing this thing, and it's made her story hundreds of times better than where it started.

good rp is not the same as good writing in my opinion, because in good writing, you only have to write the story that's in your head. in good rp however, you have to be able to write along with everyone else and follow a story that is not only yours, but everyone's who is playing along. you have to follow in areas, and not lead. you have to be a team player and not always lead dog. great rp however, that incorporates good writing and good rp. it pays arrention to all the players, and plays along, and also makes its own part interesting and specific and helps to drive the story at all times. beyond that, it doesn't add unecessary details that take away from what other people have written, instead it adds to the scene and the mood of what is happening through the eyes of the character that is being written.

and, well, that's all i'm writing about this tonight, i've blathered on about it enough for now.

Also, just to add a note to that:

A good RP'er doesn't RP his/her character. The character lives and breathes his/her own life and is unaffected by the RP'er. All the RP'er does is chronical what happens to the character.

Thats advice I got from John. Very good advice, too.

Maybe this is why we don't have more active RPers. :P
