New Experimental Theme

Postby Curulan » June 27th, 2007, 1:39 am

If anyone wants to give it a try, I am currently playing around with an experimental theme for this forum.

In the continued tradition of my preference for Web Standards, this new theme does not set specific fonts or pixel sizes, but instead uses your browser's settings for default fonts and sizes. I am also playing around a bit with the colors and drawing elements from our old ezboard forums.

The name of the theme is called "Titan Test", and you can activate it on your profile. Please test it out and give me feedback on it. I'm having particular trouble with the colors.

Good: Sorry, Curu. I honestly can't say anything good about it.

Bad: Just hard to read. Colors seem okay. Letters kind of smashed together with the icons at the top.

No offence, man. Just trying to give some "constructive criticism". THANK YOU for working on it, though.

I like it, a little. I'll probably stick to the original Titan theme for this forum though.

Having others themes is still a great idea.

Could you post a screenshot then? Like I stated above, it uses your browser's default font and size settings, so I'd like to see how it shows up on your end. If you could post what browser you use and your font settings too, that might help me.

I think my problem with it is that it's not seperated enough. there is nothing to really set apart the sections. other than that, it's not bad.

Overall: I like it... feels like the "old" theme but "smoother"

Con: Since I'm on a laptop, i *NEED* to leave the window maximized in order to see the entire forum versus before when it wasn't as bad.

I did some tooling around with colors, and I think that they should be set the way I like them now.

As to sizes/resolutions/etc... Keep in mind that this theme will size text according to your browser settings. If you use a small resolution (such as 800x600), you will probably want to change your settings to be a bit smaller than the "factory defaults".

For example, Firefox sets the default font size for variable-width fonts at 16 point and for fixed-width fonts at 13. This is ideal for 1024x768 or higher, but smaller resolutions might want smaller default sizes. Again, this is an experiment, and it works wonderfully for me. For those who aren't up to speed with web standards and the like, it might not be ideal for you. Keep in mind that about 90% of the sites on the internet predefine all their sizes to be 10px, 12px, etc. The default subBlack fonts are in the range of 10px-14px, with the largest size I found at 22px. :)

The larger the letters are, the better the forum looks, I think. Smaller doesn't work on my browser right now. Sent some SS in so that should help see my viewpoint.

Also use IEversion 6, not 7. (Company policies).

I find it really similar to the original layout, though I enjoy the larger text. I'd reccomend just adding something to separate posts (every other having a different background, for example) and sections/threads (same idea). Overall, I like it otherwise.

Well, Tara... I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to chalk up your errors to the fact that IE7 (or other versions of IE, really) doesn't fully support CSS2 properly (or CSS1, for that matter). I was not able to reproduce what you saw, even with the font options set at smaller or smallest. There is a bug with BBCodes in the the posting screen, but again... that's due to problems with IE.

I need to fix up the large "new posts/no new posts" images. The "background" of the images is black, rather than transparent. Does anyone know of a good GIF/PNG editor I can use?

I used IE6, not IE7. BUT!!!! over the past few days this is looking good.

I am keeping my profile setting to TITAN TEST because I love the outlay and font size. It's big, and that's the only size that works, but I love it. Thanks Curu
